Dune by Frank Herbert by nyackschools |
| Most teenagers have a difficult enough life without having to avoid an assassination attempt, live in the wilderness, and fulfill a prophecy. Paul Atreides, also known as Maud’Dib or Usul, has to just this and many other challenges in the book Dune by Frank Herbert.
This story takes place in an entirely fictional universe. Paul is born on Caladan and is son to Duke Leto and Jessica. Paul and his family soon move to the planet Arrakis, which is known as Dune. It is a long book but a quick science fiction read. The story is so engrossing and deals with a lot of problems with destiny because of Paul’s ability to foresee some of the future. Paul is captivating character whose life and evolution are seen by the reader. Dune is separated into three books that are based on different points in Paul’s life. These books are divided by quotes of a historian and a character in the story.
I would recommend this book to anyone who likes book’s similar to Tolkien’s Lord of the Rings series. Dune, are set in an entirely made up world that possess its own vocabulary. If you don’t take my word for it, Dune won the first Nebula Award in 1965 and Hugo Award in 1966. |

Circa 1971, an impoverished student, I hitched a lift. by Andrew Fitch |
| Circa 1971, an impoverished student, I hitched a lift. On revealing to the HGV driver that I was heading for library college, a short silence followed, then "Have you read 'Dune'? It's the most fantastic book I've read!" (There was quite a bit more about the ecology of a dehydrated planet)
How right he was.
