Review by Denver Patron |
| I liked this book very much, even better than the author's first book. It was extremely informative and eye opening on life in Afghanistan before and after the Taliban took over. It's a page turner.
--------------
Wonderful book. Very Unfortunate about life as a woman in Afghanistan. Highly recommended.
--------------
Fantastic story! Riveting - I finished it in two days. The characters were so alive, and the story helps one understand the history of Afghanistan and Pakistan.
--------------
Loved it - sad - but very informative. Absolutely recommend.
--------------
I disliked all the foreign words used without a description of them. I liked the insights into the lives of women in Afghanistan.

Khaled Hosseini is destined to be one of the great authors of this generation. This book is indeed even better than Kite Runner. He has taken a very sad story and managed to infuse with hope and light. As a man, Hosseini's portrayal of the lives of woman is inspired. This |

Thousand Splendid Suns by nyackschools |
| A Thousand Splendid Suns is about two young women living in somewhat present day war-stricken Afghanistan. The story starts with Mariam narrating as a young girl. As she grows up, the reader witnesses some horrific truths that young women like her had to face. In part two, the narration switches to Laila, a girl younger than Mariam who also witnesses her share of terrible occurrences. The two women come together when they both are forced to marry the same abusive husband (polygamy being quite common in the setting). As more life-changing events occur to the main characters, the reader will be able to appreciate some themes from the book, such as loyalty, family, sexism, human struggling, and faith. I really liked reading this book. I feel like it was an important experience because it exposes so many truths. The writing was good and the characterization was great. All the characters were very believable. Khaled Hosseini managed to include a lot of detail while still keeping a poetic style. A Thousand Splendid Suns was a shocking, horrifying, and incredibly beautiful story. I would recommend it to mature young adults who would be able to handle the subject matter. |
