Demanding and needing to be put down by Andrew Fitch |
| Demanding and needing to be put down, I found, so that my emotions would have space to process all that was being suggested. "My beloved is mine" as a reprise has echoes of Biblical-poetic themes of loss and longing that defy and transcend death, and sit in such powerful resonance with the Black experience of slavery, escape to freedom, civil war and the continuing struggle for equality. The "too-thick love" which drives Sethe to kill her baby, and call her back from the dead, is a raw vision indeed. Does the ghost's stream of consciousness work? It made for a good discussion.
