Two Italian orphan brothers get separated as well as two young lovers by LibrarySquare |
| This historical novel is inspired by the lives of the author`s grandparents and is set in Italy and New York City. The beautiful language with vivid descriptions and details give readers a sense of place and culture. The characters are strong and sharply drawn. You will feel the loneliness of two abandoned brothers left at a convent, and the pull of attraction of a young boy of fifteen and a sorrowful girl, Enza, at a funeral of the girl’s little sister. Two brothers are abruptly separated. One goes into the priesthood and the other, Ciro, is apprenticed to a New York shoemaker. Enza goes to work in America as a seamstress. I especially like Enza’s decision to create her own happiness amidst life`s joys and tragedies.
