|1. I found this much easier to read than Wolf Hall and therefore more enjoyable. Invaluable cast of characters in front of book.Although I, of course knew the ending, I found the accounts of the executions quite upsetting. Very thought provoking ie was Anne Boleyn guilty of all accusations.
2. Hitherto Henry VIII and his first 3 wives have been two dimensional and flat as Holbein's paintings of them for me. Post Mantel they are vividly three dimensional and all acheived via the refined senses of her main character, Thomas Cromwell.Mantel's use of description and dialogue transported me back to Tudor times. Although they do things differently there Mantel made the past so alive for me. I completely understood and condoned their actions, the past was made familiar "country" for me. Highly rated. Good read.
